Exploring rangeless alternatives
Article Abstract:
Many air forces opt to utilize less-costly and more-efficient rangeless air combat maneuvering instrumentation systems, or ACMI, in providing their aircraft pilots with combat-simulation training. Rangeless ACMI systems serve as a viable substitute for conventional ACMI technology, which has developed to become capable of supplying every relevant parameter's detailed read-out. Conventional ACMI combat-simulation technology, however, presents limitations in its need for a big sea or land area for training applications and for a significant amount of equipment that are fixed on the ground.

Contenders gunning for Joint Strike Fighter contract award
Article Abstract:
Rheinmetall, a Germany-based company, is working with Boeing and ammunition maker Primex Technologies in the US to jointly promote the BK 27 fighter gun system for the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF). While Germany has no plans to acquire JSF aircraft, Rheinmetall believes that the BK 27 has a better volume/performance characteristics and is fully tested with more than 3,000 guns made. It was noted that the instantaneous rate of fire of the BK 27 is 700 rounds per minute, better than a Gatling-based M61A1 system that requires a run-up time before achieving its maximum rate. This rate makes the BK 27 more attractive as analysis shows that pilots fire bursts of 0.5 to one second in dogfights. Moreover, the BK 27's 27mm round would have a greater effect than a Gatling-based gun's 20mm round.
