Cool feet: Taiwan businessmen rethink China plans
Article Abstract:
Chinese saber-rattling over Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's US visit has made Taiwanese businessmen nervous about mainland investment, but few seem ready to pull out. New Taiwanese investments in China fell, however, from $193 million in June to $63 million in Aug. In a recent survey, 60% of respondents said the worsened relations will affect their planning, while 24% said it will not. China's plusses still loom large, however, including a vast labor pool, an enormous potential market, and a large resource base.

Graftbusters: there's never a dull day for Taichung's prosecutors
Article Abstract:
Taichung's 42 prosecutors are known as the best crime-fighting team in Taiwan because they pursue convictions on crimes that had not been previously prosecuted. These crimes include vote buying, videogame graft, contraband smuggling to inmates, and illegal building. The hardest cases to prosecute involve public-works projects. The prosecutors are also investigating bribe taking in the police department. The key to their success is their investigative methods, including the use of informants and bugging phones.
