Coping with smoke in atria: It is sometimes felt that saving energy by natural ventilation in atria conflicts with smoke control
Article Abstract:
Natural environment ventilation design focuses on the use of passive means for ventilation based on a combination of wind pressure and stack effects, with fresh air supplied even if windows are closed. Atria or internal stairwells are often incorporated to take advantage of such effects. The control of indoor air quality is the key issue for winter environmental ventilation, and controllable trickle ventilators can be installed to meet the requirements for indoor air quality control. In summer the emphasis is on minimizing overheating, and design must ensure good air distribution. Fire design should enable safe access by fire services and there should be sufficient provision to control the creation, movement and venting of smoke.

Insulation and energy conservation
Article Abstract:
Insulation and the conservation of energy are increasingly important concepts in building design. Research has indicated that all-round insulation of a semi-detached home becomes cost-effective at insulation thicknesses of over 200mm, but some experts believe even thicker insulation is necessary. A range of UK firms produce specialized insulating materials for the building industry, but other materials with good insulating properties include cork and wool. Interest in energy conservation in building design is likely to focus increasingly on the use of photovoltaic cells.

Breathing in the city
Article Abstract:
Architects are at the forefront of innovative design techniques when it comes to developing new systems to improve the quality of air in city buildings. Top-down ventilation systems take advantage of a building's height by directing and collecting air at the highest possible vantage point, reducing the amount of pollution and dirt particles in the air. The system relies heavily on gravity produced by the wind to push the clean air through the ventilation network, although care must be taken to ensure rain does not enter the system.
