The Clinton administration is in a diplomatic quandary with regard to an alumni reunion at Cornell University scheduled this spring. The university has invited Taiwanese Pres. Lee Teng-hui to attend the gathering. Lee, who holds a doctorate degree from the university, has expressed his intention to go to the affair and the Taiwanese government has asked the US State Dept. to permit the visit. Wei's conviction is likely to heighten Sino-U.S. tension
Article Abstract:
The conviction of a Beijing court of dissident Wei Jingsheng to a penalty exceeding the maximum period for rebellion has incurred the ire of US citizens and hampers the normalization of relations between the US and China. Wei's relatives have asked Pres. Clinton to exert pressure on the matter. It is to be recalled that the two countries are still on the verge of recovering from the sour relations incurred as a result of the visit by Taiwan's president to the US in early 1995.

Washington's policy on Taiwan appears muddled as officials warn both sides
Article Abstract:
Many observers believe that the US should clarify its position with regard to the rising tension between China and Taiwan. The Clinton administration has warned China of grave consequences should it launch an attack on Taiwan. It has also urged Taiwan to desist from acts that could provoke a violent Chinese reaction. A clarification is necessary as both sides could easily misinterpret US policy and then decide to act on the basis of this error.
