Bank denies report of its demise
Article Abstract:
The rumors of the impending collapse of the Krung Thai Bank have been denied by the bank's president, saying reports have been exaggerated. The bank had $10.37 billion in nonperforming loans or 59% of total outstanding credit at the end of Jun 1999 compared to the 84% estimate made by PricewaterhouseCoopers FAS Ltd. The auditing firm's report, whose key points were published in Thai newspapers, accused Krung Thai of not conducting a thorough study of borrowers' financial backgrounds before approving loans.

Lessons are learned from the region's financial crisis
Article Abstract:
The Asian financial crisis has resulted in changes in the corporate landscape of Thailand despite continuing strong resistance. Recession and its accompanying financial turmoil has taken the culture of easy money out of the country's financial system and has replaced it with a more careful process of credit approval. Despite an assessment that a full recovery for Thailand is still a number of years away, there is now an awareness of the need for a more thorough investment risk analysis.
