Telecom Italia lacks international plan
Article Abstract:
Telecom Italia SpA raised speculation among analysts regarding its lack of a global strategy. This was prompted by its failure to purchase a 20% in Bouygues Telecom, a French mobile-telephone operator, in a deal worth 456 million lira ($744.6 million). Telecom Italia, following criticism from company shareholders, then made public that it would bring forward a three-year strategic proposal in September 1998. A telecom analyst stated that it was not encouraging to wait until September 1998 to come up with a competitive strategy.

Abete becomes BNL chairman to lead sale
Article Abstract:
Banca Nazionale del Lavoro has appointed Luigi Abete to become chairman of the company, replacing Mario Sarcinelli, who resigned in June 1998, after alleging that the Treasury sidelined him as he prepared the bank for privatization. The new chairman, Abete, used to be head of employment's association Confindustria. The appointment of Abete reflects continuity in the management of the bank and that his appointment will include full executive powers and be open-ended, according to Treasury Ministry representative Roberto Ulissi.
