New mindset in Taiwan may complicate ties with China; changes in classrooms lead youth to feel more distant from mainland than their parents
Article Abstract:
Taiwanese with ages below 40 are more inclined than their parents to support the status quo of de facto separation from mainland than their parents before them. A survey conducted by television station TVBS in Oct 1998 revealed that only Taiwan's older generation is inclined towards the reunification of the two countries or the declaration of formal independence. China is closely monitoring the results of the Dec 5, 1999 elections where Chen Shui-bian, a leader of the independence-leaning Democratic Progressive Party, will run for re-election as Taipei's mayor.

Taiwan advertisers shake up spots in the wake of massive earthquake
Article Abstract:
The massive earthquake that shook Taiwan in Sept 1999 has forced businesses to modify their ads to reflect their compassionate side. However, this strategy has sparked a debate on whether it is appropriate for corporations to brag about their supposed compassion and generosity in a time of crisis or not. Some corporations, instead of spending money on half-page ads in newspapers and TV and radio ads, have opted to contribute directly to fund-raising efforts for earthquake victims without any fanfare.
