Crescent moon rising: the MILF puts its Islamic credentials up front
Article Abstract:
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has established itself as an Islamic organization and this distinguishes it from the other insurgent group, the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF). While the aim of both organizations is to liberate the land of the Moros, or Philippine Muslims, MILF wants to set up an Islamic government after liberation. MNLF was set up in 1970 and was led by Nur Misauri. In 1978, the MILF split away from Nisauri and the name change occurred in 1980. The belief that every Muslim is duty-bound to fight the holy way is one of the reasons for the huge numbers in the MILF's armed wing, the Bangsamoro Islamic Armed Forces.

Peace is a weapon: official talks weaken communists, but not Muslims
Article Abstract:
The Philippine govt's talks with communist insurgents apparently helped weaken the latter but those with Muslim rebels had the opposite effect. The 1992 ceasefire with the Moro National Liberation Front allowed the breakaway Moro Islamic Liberation Front to consolidate and build its forces. Older members of the MNLF are said to be covertly supporting armed groups like MILF and Abu Sayyaf, and younger members oppose the MNLF leadership for giving away too much.
