Crisil aims to gain from India's increasing use of debt

Credit rating Information Services of India (Crisil) hopes to take advantage of India's increasing use of debt. Because India is eager to grow its debt market, a number of investors have started bonding with Crisil. Many analysts are giving the company a strong rating despite its surging stock price. The country's driving need for infrastructure improvements which prompted the government to seek ways to grow its debt market to fund future projects, would mean increased business for the company. The company rates creditworthiness od state-run corporations seeking to sell bonds and other types of debt.

Oriflame India's marketing success in India can be attributed to its recruitment technique. Oriflame is recruiting middle-class women who, in turn, recruit their friends after selling the cosmetics to them. The company, which is a joint venture between Oriflame International and Rollscon India, reports that since Jan. 1997 sales figures have increased to 600%. Oriflame's 15,000 distributors are expected to increase to 80,000 by 1999.
