Critical landscape in the Ruhr's renewal
Article Abstract:
The 1997 Bundesgartenschaus (garden festival) in Germany, is being held in Gelsenkirchen in the city of Ruhr. The main theme is ecological and economic recovery from past exploitation. A project was launched in 1991 following the closure of the major Nordstern colliery, and the winning design aimed to capitalize on the heritage of the site. The festival is an extension of the process, and there was dramatic use of spoil to create slopes and hills, interconnected with steel bridges and paths. Existing buildings, such as the old pithead buildings, are incorporated into the landscape, and new structures have a confident design.
