Cross-straits trafficking: China implicated in record heroin seizure
Article Abstract:
Taiwanese authorities seized heroin being smuggled in from China's Yunnan province and used the seizure, at 336 kilograms the biggest in Taiwan's history, to herald a new crackdown on drug trafficking. Under Premier Lien Chan, Taiwan will establish a cabinet-rank supervisory board on drug enforcement. Taiwan may also authorize the more frequent use of capital punishment against drug smugglers. However, Taiwan's new anti-drug campaign will require the cooperation of China where heroin is reportedly produced illicitly.

Chafing at the bit: Taiwanese firms discuss warnings about China
Article Abstract:
It is estimated that 31,000 Taiwanese companies have invested over $11 billion in mainland China since the end of the 1980s. However, the Taiwanese government is asking businesses to be less bullish about investing in China and is seeking to restrict commercial links. The government is concerned that some of the mainland projects in which the Taiwanese firms are investing are too large, making Taiwan too dependent on the Chinese economy.

Schools of thought: long overdue textbook recast runs into controversy
Article Abstract:
Taiwan's first major revision of the school curriculum for 10 years decrees that a course on the island's history, society and geography be taught from new texts. There are claims that the new texts play down Taiwan's links with China, however some believe that the curriculum is still full of China-centric views. Others feel that the texts are an adequate introduction to issues which are essential to good citizenship.
