Crying wolf
Article Abstract:
United Kingdom truckers have carried out protests in London, England, over tax increases on diesel fuels and vehicle excise duties. The UK has high fuel taxes, and the industry claims that job losses will occur and that companies could move fleets abroad. It is not clear that this will occur since social and employment costs are higher in mainland Europe, and road tolls are also higher. Heavy trucks impose social costs such as environmental damage and accidents, as well as imposing more wear on roads, so there is a case for arguing that truckers pay too little. Tolls would mean that foreign trucks would contribute, and there is a case for this.
