Staying on?
Article Abstract:
The Turkish president, Suleyman Demirel, may continue in his post, rather than retiring in May 2000, as was expected. He has been skilled as an arbiter between the military and politicians, and Turkey's economic recovery could be hampered if political instability follows Demirel's replacement. A change in the Turkish constitution will be needed if Demirel is to stay on longer as president than the seven-year limit. Other constitutional changes could also be included to help promote democracy in Turkey. An increasing number of Turks see constituitional change as beneficial for democracy.

Things fall apart
Article Abstract:
The three dominant civilian political parties in Turkey have slowing been losing their influence, and the remaining two have been considering joining forces.
