Currency keeps cool in meltdown as locals hold faith
Article Abstract:
The Currency in Hong Kong has managed to stay put in terms of its trading range to the US dollar despite the blue-chip Hang Seng Index's 33% decline from its levels in August 1997. The Hong Kong dollar's trading range against the US dollar was even boosted above its usual trading levels as overnight interest rates were increased by monetary authorities to as much as 300%. Despite confidence on the strength of the Hong Kong dollar the capital controls implemented by Standard Chartered Bank PLC and Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp. send out alarming trouble signals in the market.
