Cut again
Article Abstract:
The Bank of England Monetary Policy Committee may reduce interest rates in April 1999, partly due to fears about the strength of pound sterling. The European currency, the euro, has been affected by concern about economic problems in mainland Europe, and conflict in Kosovo. A strong pound means that imports are cheaper, and hits exports. Meanwhile, UK unemployment has started to rise and gross domestic product is not growing as rapidly as previously estimated. Inflationary pressures have eased, so rates could be cut.

Article Abstract:
The Japanese government's rescue of Long Term Credit Bank has given rise to further problems. The government is to nationalise the weakest of the major banks, and an independent committee is to supervise the clean-up of the banking industry. Voters are opposed to rescues for agricultural cooperatives, but these co-ops support the Japanese Liberal Democratic party. Farmers could take out their deposits, which could lead to a run on the banks, provoking a major banking crisis.
