SBI PROPOSES TO UNDERWRITE FULL PSU DIVESTMENT
Article Abstract:
State Bank of India (SBI) has proposed to underwrite the entire public sector undertakings (PSUs) divestment programme of the Indian government in 1998-99 which amounts to Rs5,000 crore. The government has already moved in for divestment in Container Corporation (CONCOR), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Gas authority of India Ltd (GAIL) and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd (VSNL). The government's Rs5000 crore disinvestment plans for 1998-99 have been cited by critics as a non-achievable target. As per previous records, the government was able to raise Rs5,607 crore in 1994-95 against a target of Rs4,000 crore. In 1995-96, it raised Rs1,397 crore against target of Rs7,000 crore, in 1996-97, the amount garnered was Rs575 crore (Rs5,000 crore) and in 1997-98 Rs907 crore (Rs7,000 crore). (gs)

SBI'S FEB LOAN BOOK DIPS BY Rs1,500 CR FROM JAN
Article Abstract:
The State Bank of India's loan advances has dropped by Rs1,500 crore from Rs72,250 crore to Rs70,743 crore between January 15, 1999 and February 12, 1999. This has reduced the year on year growth rate from 19 percent to 12 percent. This has been attributed to decline in credit disbursals to Food Corporation of India for procurement operations. However, SBI's deposit liabilities have remained high owing to inflows from Resurgent India Bonds. (um)(vr)
