DENMARK: AALBORG PORTLAND'S INTERIM RESULTS

The Danish cement company Aalborg Portland Holding (APH) reports a DKr 1,671mn (USD 201mn) net profit for the first six months of 2000, up from DKr 946mn for the same period in 1999. The result is positively affected by the industrial group NKT's sell-off of Giga, as APH owns nearly 35% of NKT. APH reports a DKr 201mn operating profit, up from DKr 174mn, and turnover increased to DKr 2,521mn from DKr 2,240mn.

Denmark:Aalborg to present documentation of tax effects
Article Abstract:
The Danish cement producer Aalborg Portland has to present written documentation that the proposed cement tax will lead to staff cuts. The tax proposal presented by the government would mean an additional DKr 80-100mn (US$10-12m) revenues. Enhedslisten, one of the parties whose support is needed by the government, will vote against the proposal if Aalborg can present documentation for the alleged effects.

DENMARK: AALBORG PORTLAND TO APPEAL
Article Abstract:
Danish cement producer Aalborg Portland will appeal against the cartelisation sentence by the European Court of Justice. It is also reported that several other European cement producers will appeal. Thereby, the legal struggle that started in 1989 continues. Aalborg Portland was sentenced to pay fines amounting to DKr 24 million (US$ 3 mn), plus accrued interest.
