DENMARK: AXFOOD AND ICA HUNT MARKET SHARE
Article Abstract:
Swedish grocers, ICA Ahold and Axfood are looking to take market share in Denmark. ICA Ahold has taken the step into the Danish market through its purchase of Iso, which is a Copenhagen based chain. Axfood plans to gain 20% of the market. According to MD Mats Jansson 20% is the target for all of Scandinavia's markets. Preben Qvist-Sorensen, from wholesale company Edeka, considers Axfood's plans difficult to realise. According to Qvist-Sorensen Axfood would need to enter an alliance with the Danish wholesaler Dagrofa or similar. Dagrofa currently cooperates with Axfood and its MD Villy Rasmussen does not consider Axfood's ambitions likely. Dagrofa has bought the chain KC Storkop in order to take a strategic position within the retail sector. The measures are seen to be an attempt to prevent the loss of market share to the newcomers.

Denmark: 175% growth in internet trade for FDB
Article Abstract:
FDB, the Danish co-operative wholesale society, reports a 175% growth in turnover of internet trade in 2001. The turnover exceeds DKr 10mn (USD 1.2mn), but the exact figure has not been published. Only FBD's 1.2mn members are allowed to use the internet service. As many as 90% of the users are over 30 years of age, and 60% are women, contrary to clients of most other internet retailers. The main purpose of the service is that the clients can purchase goods that are not sold in the nearest FDB store, such as expensive wines and spirits. The clients order the goods via the internet, and go to the store to pay for and fetch them.
