DENMARK: FOOD MINISTER CRITICAL OF SUBSIDIES
Article Abstract:
Ritt Bjerregaard, the Danish food minister, is critical of the agriculture and the fishing industries constant demands for subsidies to solve their problems. Bjerregaard says subsidies merely provide short-term solutions to problems. According to her, we are heading towards a new era where companies should no longer rely on subsidies alone. The minister says it is important to look ahead instead. This is the reason why she has offered the agriculture DKr100mn to be used for research and development. This offer, however, was rejected by the industry. Ritt Bjerregaard says the fishing industry is currently afflicted with over-capacity and poor profitability. Consequently, a new system of regulations will be introduced for the fishing industry on 1st January 2002, which is expected to improve the situation.

DENMARK: ROYAL GREENLAND CLOSES DOWN FACTORIES
Article Abstract:
Royal Greenland is set to close down half of its factories, which means 250-300 people losing their jobs. One of the factories to be closed down is its new DKr60mn (US$6.9mn) factory in Christianshab. Royal Greenland will instead freeze and pack fish at sea on its floating fish-processing vessels. The decision to close down factories was brought about tightening competition, particularly from Polar Seafood and American Seafood.
