Denmark:Industry welcomes new directive for food labels
Article Abstract:
A new food labelling proposal by the European Commission has won acceptance by Dansk Industri, the Confederation of Danish industries. According to the new proposal, the old "25% rule" will be abolished, which means that every single ingredient included in the food product must be stated on the product. Poul Melgaard Jensen, consultant with the Association of Danish Food Producers, says the new directive will entail considerably higher costs for companies as new labels will have to be produced for all products and as the labels will have to be replaced with new ones as soon as ingredients in the products change. Under the directive, ingredients that could cause allergies should be accentuated on the labels - a directive supported by Dansk Industri.
