DIESEL CARS BECOME ATTRACTIVE
Article Abstract:
With the Government of India lowering diesel prices by 10 percent, diesel cars have become more economical and attractive. The diesel price cut will help producers of Tata Indica, Fiat Uno, Ford Escort, Opel Astra and Maruti Zen cars. Tata Indica producers will be big beneficiary as three out of the four models launched by them in December 1998 were diesel versions. The cost difference between diesel car and the petrol one is only Rs26,000. Lower fuel cost and 15 percent differential in capital costs between similar petrol and diesel models will change the price value equation and may make consumer to consider long term benefits. However, industry watchers rule out phenomenal changes in consumer preferences. They do not see big shift from petrol cars to diesel ones in the immediate future. (psr)

BAN ON NEW NON-COMMERCIAL DIESEL VEHICLES LIKELY
Article Abstract:
The Environment Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority (EPPA) of Delhi plans to ban registration of new non- commercial diesel vehicles. The ban will be applicable to taxis also. EPPA's move follows the concern over the increase in the demand for diesel vehicles. Diesel exhaust contains a huge level of cancer causing agents. According to the Centre of Science and Environment, the consumption of diesel has increased by 4 times between 1980 and 1994. In Delhi, the consumption of diesel is 2.7 times that of petrol. Diesel vehicles are said to be contributing significantly to the dangerous pollutants in the air despite their small number. (ag)
