Since becoming UK home secretary, David Blunkett has not shown himself to be as right-wing as his reputation for social authoritarianism had made some Labour left-wingers fear. However, the events of Sep 11, 2001, have left him with the major challenge of balancing public security and civil liberty.

That's enough loyalty

UK politicians have shown great unity in their response to the Sep 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the US, but it is now time to normalize political life. Being united in support of the US-led military action does not mean that UK political parties cannot disagree over other matters.

The decision not to reappoint Elizabeth Filkin to the post of UK parliamentary commissioner for standards is regarded as a sign that she has been too successful in supervising MPs. The standards committee refused to give adequate support to Filkin.
