A tangled web
Article Abstract:
Jeffrey Archer is a British politician from the Conservative Party who has admitted to fabricating an alibi in a libel case, and he may be expelled from the party as a result of the scandal. The person he had asked to provide the alibi has stated that he agreed to do this to help Archer's marriage, since Archer claimed to have been seeing a woman friend and wished to hide this fact. The libel case related to allegations about a relationship between Archer and a prostitute. United News and Media, which now owns the newspaper involved in the libel case, is seeking costs and for damages to be returned, and is considering asking for a retrial.

Price of folly
Article Abstract:
Jonathan Aitken was once a cabinet minister in a United Kingdom Conservative government, and he has pleaded guilty to perjury and perversion of justice charges. He is likely to be jailed, though the jail term may be short since he is perceived as having suffered humiliation. He was involved in a libel action against a newspaper, the Guardian, and saw himself as trapped into a series of lies. The paper alleged that he had breached cabinet rules on accepting hospitality when he stayed at the Ritz hotel with the Saudi royal family as hosts.
