Once-profitable banking firms are finding that mergers can have a negative bottom line impact. North Carolina-based Wachovia Corp reported a $40 million loss in its fourth quarter, due to a charge against earnings caused by its South Carolina National acquisition.

NatWest and the Bank of England: an apology
Article Abstract:
The Economist is retracting a series of articles that first appeared in 1988 that accused NatWest of wrongdoing in the way it organized a rights issue for the Blue Arrow employment agency. An investigation has completely exonerated all those implicated.

Consumer banking in Asia is providing great profits for Citicorp, and Asian markets will account for half of the bank's revenues by the year 2000. Profits in Asia were $400 million in 1991, while losses in the US amounted to $894 million.
