Georgian Pres Zviad Gamaskhurdia was elected last May, but fled to Armenia Jan 6 when rebel leaders Tengiz Kitovani and Djaba Ioselliani seized power. Unlike ethnic struggles in other ex-Soviet republics, the warring sides are from the same intellectual elite, with similar policies.

The Abkhaz, who account for 18% of the population of Abkhazia in western Georgia, are fighting for regional independence and are doing quite well. They hold a key region and are humiliating the Georgian army. Edward Shevardnadze claims they may be getting help from Russia.

Article Abstract:
Georgian soldiers and Abkhazian separatists have clashed since Aug 1992, resulting in hundreds of deaths, homelessness and starvation. Peacekeeping efforts are up to neighboring Russia, which has interests such as the Russian population in Abkhazia.
