Deciphering U.S. engagement policy toward China
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton's policy towards China is not a result of the changing international climate but a result of changes within the US government. The United States realizes that containment of China may be dangerous and that engagement is the best possible option. Also, the second term of President Clinton also gives him more freedom from legislation to implement his programs.

Japan's efforts are to be praised, not feared

Japanese prime minister Junichiro Koizumi is praised for his support of the United States and its war on terrorism. Mr. Koizumi is preparing legislation that would allow Japan's Self-Defense Forces to send arms and medical treatment to U.S. and British armies in Afghanistan.
