Deconstructing Latin ills
Article Abstract:
Brazilian living standards have dropped, while most Spanish speaking countries in Latin America are faced with severe recessions. Political stability is also a concern in many countries, such as Venezuela. Deregulation and liberal economic policies have been criticized. Yet Mexico is performing better than many Latin American economies and has become closely linked to the US economy, as have many Central American economies, to a lesser extent. Cyclical problems and external factors have hit Latin America, and Venezuela and Ecuador have been affected by lack of reform rather than too much reform.
