Bubble era
Article Abstract:
The Hong Kong local government announced measures in Jun 1998 to support the property market. It will freeze land sales until Apr 1999 and allocate $1390 million for home-buying loans and tax rebates related to property ownership. The property developers stand to gain most from this package, but the Hong Kong government maintains that it has introduced them because the territory needs boom conditions in the property market for economic health. Some analysts believe that the government should have used direct methods to stimulate demand in preference to this indirect method.

Shotgun wedding: George Soros meets Kim Dae Jung
Article Abstract:
South Korean President-elect Kim Dae Jung and George Soros may offer the best prospects for resolving the financial crisis in South Korea. Kim is well aware of the requirements of investors, and is clearly opposed to the close links between politics and business that have traditionally existed in South Korea. However, he has offered few specific solutions. If he takes the advice offered by George Soros, there will inevitably be negative repercussions for the workers who have given him their political support.
