Deep dividends: Philippines to benefit from oil and gas finds
Article Abstract:
Newly discovered oil and natural gas deposits may allow the Philippines to reduce energy imports and to eliminate the power shortages that inhibit economic growth. A joint venture between Shell Philippines Exploration and Occidental Petroleum discovered the new deposits, which are located under the ocean off the north coast of Palawan island. Called the Malampaya field, the deposits will require innovative engineering to extract because they lie 3,400 meters below the 900 meter deep ocean. A pipeline to convey the oil and gas to Luzon will also have to be built.
