ECD Architects and Energy Consultants was set up in 1980 with the intention of designing energy efficient buildings. The practice is successful in the social housing, refurbishment and commercial sectors. Work is split between four teams with a quarter of ECD's income coming from energy consultancy. The practice makes a point of tight financial control and believes marketing to be crucial to its success. Its specialism in energy and environmental aspects of design is used as a unique selling point. ECD is seeking quality assurance registration and supports continuing professonal development.

Expanding beyond design

Elsworth Sykes Partnership is diversifying to be able to provide a wide range of services. The architectural practice has both acqiured other firms and grown organically. It has also set up a network of like-minded practices in developing areas of Britain. The services offered in addition to building design include; construction, quantity surveying, property management and planning advice. Elsworth Sykes places a premium on quality assurance and training. Its turnover for the year to Mar 92 was 3.77 million pounds.

Maintaining a broad base
Article Abstract:
Architectural firm Broadway Malyan undertakes housing, commercial and retail work and has both UK offices and a European division. It has won numerous awards including the RIBA South-East Region award for outstanding contributions to architecture. Most of its work over the last two years has been for the retail sector and housing associations. Although architecture is its core business, it offers comprehensive services for the development industry.
