The Algerian government reacted angrily to a proposal by Pres Mitterrand that a European-sponsored peace conference be held in Algeria. The French ambassador to Algeria Alain Juppe stated that France's history as a coloniser of Algeria makes it a poor candidate for organising such a peace movement.
