Denmark: Pork prices expected to fall
Article Abstract:
Bent Claudi Lassen, head of Danske Slagterier, the Federation of Danish Pig Producers and Slaughterhouses, forecasts a drop in pork prices as from 2002. According to him, the price of a kilo of pork will drop to DKr9.50 (US$1.1), which is the same as in 2000. Claudi Lassen believes, however, that after 2002 prices will start rising again. This is, however, not a dramatic drop, according to Claudi Lassen and Niels Mikkelsen, head of Danish Crown. Lindhart B. Nielsen, head of Landsudvalget for Svin, points out that the falling pork prices will further accelerate the development towards bigger pig breeding units. He expects the present 13,000 units in Denmark to shrink to 7,000 by 2010.

Denmark: Pig breeders turn to small slaughterhouses
Article Abstract:
The planned merger between Danish Crown and Steff-Houlberg is expected to result in a large number of pig breeders looking for other buyers for their raw material. This benefits the small co-operative slaughterhouse Tican as well as other private slaughterhouses. Pig farmers expect to get better paid from the small slaughterhouses. Tican has long had suppliers on their waiting list but is not planning to expand capacity.
