Denmark: TDC dominates the Danish broadband market
Article Abstract:
TDC has boosted its market share in the Danish broadband market in the past six months to 56%. TDC Internet's marketing manager Martin Lippert says TDC has the situation under control now following major problems with suppliers in the past year. TDC's rival Cybercity has 22% of the ADSL market. MD Henrik Clausen says they are satisfied with the development as things are going as planned and the company focuses on corporate clients. Tiscali MD Svend-Erik Jensen complains that the company has to reject about 50% of prospective clients as TDC has no room for them on their traditional telecommunications network, which is used by rivals for ADSL. The company is in the process of negotiating a deal with TDC to share the network so that they can be used for both telephony and ADSL. Orange has managed to capture a mere 2% share of the Danish ADSL market, which the company's managing director Monique Moulle-Zetterstrom ascribes to technical problems and says the company is no longer actively seeking ADSL customers. Turnover in the broadband market in Denmark was DKr213mn in 2000, and is set to rise to DKr3.2bn by 2005, according to analysis company IDC.

DENMARK:UMTS AUCTION CAUSES UNCERTAINTY AMONG OPERATORS
Article Abstract:
In Denmark, telecoms operators' interest in bidding for the Danish UMTS licences is cooling down due to the ambiguous conditions in conjunction with the auctions. According to Ib Tolstrup of Telekommunikationsindustrien, the trade organisation for telecoms operators, both operators and suppliers are growing uncertain as Telestyrelsen, the National Telecom Authority, wants all the new content services to be regulated on the basis of the regulations pertaining to the controversial 900 phone numbers, which among other things comprise sex-service lines. Telecoms analyst John Strand points out that the number of UMTS licences is not in proportion to the size of the Danish population; four licences for a population of five million Danes. In England, five licences cover a population of 60 million people. The Telecom Authority is to meet with telecom operators in mid-September in order to find a consensus regarding the content services. Ib Tolstrup, however, claims the meeting should be arranged prior to the UMTS auction.

DENMARK: MAERSK DATA NOT TO BID FOR UMTS LICENCE
Article Abstract:
Maersk Data has decided not to bid for the UMTS licences in Denmark. Maersk Data's information manager Marie-Louise Arnfast says the demand to establish four independent UMTS networks and the fact that the licence holders are not allowed to co-operate with this are the reasons why the company have decided not to submit a bid. Even Tele2, that has been among the candidates to bid for a Danish UMTS licence, is now considering withdrawing its bid. The final decision has not be made yet.
