An analysis of the deodorant market in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK for the period 1994 to 1998 reveals the factors behind the growth of the industry. These contributing variables are product innovation, introduction of premium-priced and value-added offerings, and heavy promotional campaigns. Sprays retained their dominance of the markets while men's products accounted for growth in a number of regions. Forecasts are also discussed.

Spain's make-up and colour cosmetics market, composed by eye and facial make-up, lip and nail products, posted an 8% growth at current prices between 19921 and 1996. In 1996, facial make-up was the leading sector with a value share of 35.5%; followed by lip products (25.6%); eye make-up (24.4%) and nail products (14.5%).

The European deodorants market, divided into two district sectors, sprays and others, is led by the UK, which posted 18.6% real growth during 1992-1996. France and Italy posted 6.6% and 0.7% growth in market performance in real terms, respectively, versus the 9.5% decline in Germany and Spain's 2.9% drop.
