The birth rate in Japan continues to decrease and this peculiarity may endanger Japan's economic future by reducing the labor force. Japanese women are beginning to see motherhood as an unrewarding task and this has translated into reduced birth rates. A survey by the Japanese government in 1994 reveals that only 22.6% of Japanese women enjoy parenthood compared with 71.6% of American mothers and 53.7% of Korean mothers. This attitude of Japanese women has been attributed to the social system that is unkind to working mothers.
