Slovenia: the thin EU line
Article Abstract:
Slovenia's progress towards economic and democratic stability has been recognized by the European Union, which has invited the Alpine republic to begin 'fast-track' talks towards membership. Slovenia is the wealthiest of the ex-communist nations, with a GDP of $9,471 per capita in 1996, against $3,276 in the Czech Republic. However, Slovenia is in no hurry to enter negotiations and has adopted a gradualism policy, which has been criticized by the EU. Foreign investment in Slovenia is healthy, with around $1.9 billion already invested, although the UK's presence is small, with just two manufacturers represented.
