Design of tool magazine and operational areas for a multi-tool machine
Article Abstract:
Algorithms for the design of the operational area and the tool magazine for a multi-tool machine were generated. A heuristic for determining the number of concurrent operations on the machine and the location of these operations in square, equal-sized working areas and tool slots on the magazine was then developed. Results showed that equal-sized machine working areas and tool slots make the design problem computationally easy, while unequal, rectangular areas and slots make the design problem computationally difficult.

A hierarchical approach for the FMS scheduling problem
Article Abstract:
The scheduling problem in a flexible manufacturing system is analyzed to pinpoint ways of minimizing the makespan of a set of tasks. The problem is compounded by the ability to perform several operations on more than a singe machine. A hierarchical algorithm based on the job-scheduling problem is presented as a solution. The proposed algorithm is illustrated using a numerical example and the computational results are presented.
