Desperate ploy
Article Abstract:
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been alarmed by the defections from his Islamic Democratic Alliance party. Sharif has, consequently, resorted to sponsor a bill that would establish an Islamic law based on the Koran and the teachings of Prophet Muhammad that would serve as the country's constitution. The opposition sees this move as a desperate means of preventing desertions and upholding his economic program. Led by Benazir Bhutto, the opposition Pakistan People's Party rejects theocracy and would surely go against the proposed bill. Furthermore, Sharif's proposal scares minorities since it could be used to fuel religious fanaticism.

Kingdom without power
Article Abstract:
The Pakistani Supreme Court on May 26, 1993 returned Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to power. Pres Ghulam Ishaq Khan's Apr 18 decision to remove Sharif was thus voided, making this the first occasion in which the Pakistani judiciary has taken the side of the prime minister and parliament against the president. However, the court did not address the broader issue of whether the president should have the authority to dismiss an elected parliament and prime minister. Benazir Bhutto, leader of the opposition Pakistan People's Party, called for new elections.
