Development plans and the coastal zone
Article Abstract:
There is still no integrated approach to the management of coastal resources in England and Wales. In general, marine and terrestrial resources are regarded separately, but there is now growing pressure for a move towards integrated coastal zone management. Recent research has looked at the contribution which development plans drawn up by local planning authorities can make to planning policy for the coast and at whether these development plans present an integrated approach to coastal zone management. It was found that coastal planning issues are of considerable concern to coastal local planning authorities.

Pre-application enquiries
Article Abstract:
The Royal Town Planning Institute and the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors both recommend that developers should discuss planning applications with town planning officers before they are submitted. Local authorities are bound by lack of resources, but it is suggested that staff consistency and availability would help. The information should be kept, and the fact this service is available emphasised. The status of those giving the advice should be noted.

Women in planning
Article Abstract:
Women began to exert an influence on town planning at the end of the 19th century. Town planning was incorporated into local government activities in 1909 and 1919, and women were forced to leave by discriminatory recruitment and laws which forced them to give up work when they got married. Women now comprise 15% of the Royal Town Planning Institute's membership, but only 5% of higher management within the profession.
