Devil of a dilemma: churches ponder how to get close to Beijing
Article Abstract:
Christian church leaders in Hong Kong are taking disparate approaches to the July 1, 1997 handover of the colony to China. Many Protestant churches and groups, notably Lutherans and Methodists, seek a cooperative approach, for example by responding to requests for input on who should be the territory's first chief executive. Others are moving underground in the belief they will otherwise be targeted for helping to smuggle bibles into China and other activities. Hong Kong's Catholic bishop continues to mull his options.

Victims of success: country's progress leaves Christian churches adrift
Article Abstract:
Democratic reforms and improved economic conditions in South Korea have lead to a decline in participation in Protestant Churches. Churches had played an active role in opposing repression, but greater political openness had made this role less relevant. Greater economic stability has allowed many Koreans to pursue other nonreligious weekend activities. Some denominations are redefining their participation in Korean society by preparing for reunification and proselytizing in North Korea.
