Dialling for dollars
Article Abstract:
The Taiwanese cellular telecoms market has proved attractive for investors. Eight mobile telecoms licenses are to be awarded by the end of 1996 and 17 consortia accounting for 60 local companies had put in bids by Sep 30 1996. Almost all the consortia had a foreign partner. Taiwan has a population of 21.3 million people with only 4% owning a mobile phone. The telecoms industry has yet to be developed and is dominated by Chunghwa, a state monopoly. Two of the licenses are for the whole of Taiwan, while the others are for regions which may be less viable markets.

In the loop
Article Abstract:
Wireless local loop is one of several wireless systems being used throughout Asia to compensate for the lack of basic telephone lines. An alternative to traditional telephone networks is Code-Division Multiple Access, a type of mobile phone technology that performs better than rival Global System for Mobile phone networks and is cheaper to install than wired systems. Figures from the United Nation's International Telecommunication Union show that there are just 88 million lines serving more than 3 billion people in Asia's developing nations.

The sky's the limit
Article Abstract:
Acer was the most highly ranked Taiwanese company in 1996, benefiting from strong sales of the Acer Basic personal computer. Shipments of PCs and motherboards are set to reach 5 million for the whole of 1996, from 4 million in 1995, but the company is likely to see only limited financial growth, as margins are now very tight. It is particularly respected for its decentralised global company structure. Other leading Taiwanese corporations are discussed.
