China and the WTO
Article Abstract:
China is seeking membership of the World Trade organization (WTO) and the US appears likely to agree to this, despite the US trade deficit with China being greater than that with Japan. Chinese membership of the WTO couldbring better access to Chinese markets, and this would help exporters. China would also gain from increased exports and foreign investment. There is a danger that a hasty agreement may leave problems unsolved. China should agree to liberalization of a number of sectors in order for membership of the WTO to be approved.

Stand-off: trade with China
Article Abstract:
China will probably not be admitted into the World Trade Organization after all, and Aug 1997 talks regarding China's allowing more foreign competition were disappointing. Pres Clinton should encourage China's leadership to continue to engage in talks.
