Mineral waters and soft drinks in Italy
Article Abstract:
In 1999, Italy produced 9,700 million litres of mineral water, with 3,790 million litres of soft drinks. In value terms, Italian mineral water reported a 14.4% increase on 1995, with 18.6% growth for soft drinks. Mineral water and soft drinks are mainly sold through supermarkets and hypermarkets, and continued growth is anticipated. An overview of key trends is given, along with market data, details of packaging, foreign trade, consumption trends, distribution, advertising and forecasts for the future.

Top sales of Italian mineral water, valuing 91 million hl in total, were achieved in 1997. Italy produces more mineral water than any other country in Europe. Italians use approximately 150 litres of mineral water per annum each. Most Italian mineral water is sold at large supermarkets and distributors. Most mineral water products are sold in plastic bottles and containers.
