Article Abstract:

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has introduced the Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System (STARS) to the Terminal Radar Approch Control (TRACON) facilities at El Paso, TX, and Syracuse, NY, in early 2000. STARS was designed by FAA to provide a high level of automation and new technology to TRACON controllers. The system includes large, full color rectangular screens showig non-fading, digitally processed targets, and computers with high-reliability commercial units, designed to accommodate increasing traffic volumes.

Delays hit US programmes

Article Abstract:

The implementation of the Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is expected to be delayed by two years due to serious integrity failures discovered in the 60-day shakedown test which started in Dec 1999. FAA officials declared in Mar 2000 that diagnosing and solving the problems would result in the delay of the certification to 2002. The implementation of the WAAS is critical to the FAA's proposed use of the Global Positioning System as the primary technology in air navigation.

Question mark over precision landing capability

Article Abstract:

The delay of the new commissioning date for the US wide area augmentation system (WAAS) to 2002 is due to critical integrity failures. While WAAS is expected to provide vertical guidance to non-precision approaches at 350 ft, its capability to deliver Category 1 precision approach service at 200 ft has become questionable. Some of the failures included 100 minute loss of signals in a 60 day pre-commissioning test conducted in Dec 1999 and many false warnings.
