Divided we stand: New Zealand's Fletcher Challenge splits its stock
Article Abstract:
Confusion and skepticism from analysts and investors alike have greeted Hugh Fletcher's strategy of splitting Fletcher Challenge Ltd into four units, trading independently. The company's pulp and paper interests often dragged down the overall stock price due to their volatility, so on March 14, 1996, Fletcher separated its construction, energy, forestry, and pulp/paper activities. Actually spinning off the first two would have entailed an extra NZ$1 billion in taxes, but the course he chose has won few converts.
