Divisions multiply: internal schisms dog Taliban militia and the opposition
Article Abstract:
The Taliban militia are at the main north-south Salang highway, north of Kabul, facing the forces of Ahmed Shah Masud, leader of the opposing Northern Alliance. Teenage gunners are optimistic that Masud will be pushed back all the way to Mazar-e-Sharif, but Masud's forces swung around Jabel Seraj to strike southwards, dashing that optimism. It is reported that 500 Taliban were killed or captured during fighting around Jabel Seraj. Diplomatic initiatives by Afghanistan's neighbours and the United Nations have come to nothing, as the Taliban will not negotiate until their prisoners of war are released by their enemies. The Taliban also face internal tribal divisions.

Grinding halt: Taliban student army suffers serious setbacks
Article Abstract:
Poor organization and ethnic strife have cost the Taliban movement both its military momentum and any real chance of forming an alliance with other warring groups in Afghanistan. The Taliban, a student militia, conquered 12 of the country's 31 provinces before being roundly defeated at the gates of Kabul in March. After failing to take either that city or Herat, and being pushed back up to 100 km, they seem unlikely to remain a significant force, and the fighting will continue.
