Taiwan's best and brightest minds languish as nation values imitation over innovation
Article Abstract:
Efforts of Taiwanese inventors are stymied by lack of financial support or marketing mechanisms. The scant attention paid by the government to creative endeavors is affirmed by its R&D budget, which accounts for a mere 1.7% of its GNP. This lack of commitment to R&D belies the country's status as one of the major exporters in Asia. While Acer microcomputers and Giant bicycles are the products of Taiwanese creativity, most Taiwanese firms still rely on relatively unknown products or branded merchandise produced for multinational companies.

Article Abstract:
Senior Superintendent Barry Griffins of the Royal Hong Kong Police plans on keeping Hong Kong's traffic in order on the day of Hong Kong's turnover to China. Like many remaining expatriate police officers, Griffin hopes that the new government will look kindly on their tenure and expertise to retain their services. Griffin is more concerned about his usual functions as a police officer than his and his family's fate in the new government.
