Dog fight
Article Abstract:
The Brazilian armed forces ran the country for some 20 years to 1985, and has since almost disappeared from political life. The defense minister, Elcio Alvares, has lost his chief of staff, Solange Resende, who has been sacked, as has Brigadier Walter Werner Brauer, and Brauer enjoys the support of retired officers, and is critical of the government's privatization policies. Military commanders may complain but do not appear to want to become involved in politics.
