Dominican Rep.: Success of France Telecom's Orange
Article Abstract:
At the end of 2000, with Orange, France Telecom has broken through the Dominican cell phones market, shared up to then by Tricom, Codetel and Centennial Dominicana. Orange has secured, for 2001, a 20%-market share over a subscribers' base of more than 1mn. Raoul Fontanez, France Telecom Dominicana's CEO, explains this success by its partnership with a local company, a heavy investment in the development of its national network as well as a quality-guarantee policy through innovative services such as the SMS. France Telecom's subsidiary company in the Dominican Republic, of which 86% is held by the French operator and 14% by Carnvale, its local partner, is expected to rank second on the cell phones market very fast, namely by launching, as from November 2001, its GPRS services.
