Doors to riches: Moscow merchants find openings in Indonesia
Article Abstract:
Russian businessmen arriving in Jakarta on Aeroflot Flight 565 routinely buy bulk quantities of goods for shipment to Moscow and eventual resale. Known as chelnoks or shuttle traders, they carry some $50,000 to $70,000 in US bills into the streets of Indonesia's capital in search of discounted clothes, shoes, and, recently, rosewood doors. Their business amounts to some $88 million annually, and they comprise about 80% of the weekly flight's passengers. Aeroflot may add a second flight to handle the volume of goods.

B-a-a-b-a-a batik
Article Abstract:
The International Wool Secretariat based in Melbourne, Australia funded an Indonesian research team that has developed a new process for making tropical-weight batik fabric of wool. Prototype materials will be introduced in a fashion exhibition on Jun 18, 1996. Exhibition organizers hope that the new fabric will open up new export opportunities for Indonesia's batik industry. The new process does not require high heat to be effective unlike cotton batik fabrics.
